One-Day Spoon Carving WorkshopsLEARN TO MAKE BEAUTIFUL WOODEN SPOONS! Discover the Art of Spoon Carving There’s something deeply satisfying about taking a simple piece of wood, and with your own hands turn it into something beautiful and useful. In this hands-on Spoon Carving Workshop, you’ll learn the traditional skills of shaping and carving wood as you create your own one-of-a-kind wooden spoon. Spoon carving is a wonderful introduction to woodcarving because the project takes you through the entire creative process in a single day. You’ll begin by considering the shape and design of your spoon, then learn how to work with the grain of the wood, control the carving tools, shape the bowl and handle, refine the form, and bring the spoon to a finished surface. Along the way, you’ll begin developing the hand skills and understanding of wood that are fundamental to all types of carving. Why Spoon Carving? It’s a perfect project for beginners: no prior experience needed! You’ll have the satisfaction of leaving with a beautiful wooden spoon that you made yourself. For those with some carving experience, it’s also an opportunity to refine your technique and explore design and form. There is something meditative and relaxing about sitting at a bench and carving a piece of wood by hand. The process requires your attention, slows you down, and allows you to become absorbed in the work. At the end of the day, you don’t just have a practice piece—you have a hand-carved wooden spoon that you can use in your kitchen, give as a gift, or simply enjoy because you made it yourself. All tools are provided. There is a $15 materials charge for the wood. You just need to bring yourself and your enthusiasm! I also offer a Two-Day Spoon Carving Workshop. Call for more info and dates. Students have traveled from all over New England to attend my workshops. They have come from Canada, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland. Students have come from as far as Hawaii, Alaska and South Korea. I also offer a Two-Day Spoon Carving Workshop. Call for more info and dates. A Quick Story: I once had a woman sign up for this workshop who was very apprehensive about her abilities. She called me several times beforehand to make sure she really could do it and, as the workshop approached, told me she was going to bring a companion with her. I could tell she was uneasy. On the day of the workshop, I reassured her, and we worked through the entire process together—from designing and shaping the spoon to carving and finishing it. At the end of the day, while everyone was cleaning up, she came over to me holding her finished spoon cupped in both hands as though she were holding a gift. With a big smile she said, “I want you to know that this is the most beautiful thing that I have ever made in my life.” And she was right. It came out beautifully. Student Gallery
